I AM A…MODERN PROFESSIONAL

Inspiration

The other day, while surfing through social media I came across a post by UniteHere which is a national workers union. The post was a picture that read, ”One job should be enough”.

Take a look…

Background

Earlier this year, my family and I took part in the 50th anniversary of the historic I AM A MAN sanitation workers’ strike. The trip was sponsored by UniteHere. I sat through the various speeches listening with an unsettled spirit because I understood the message; however, I did not fully agree with everything being shared. My reality, in today’s professional and economic climate, is that we live in an era where people can literally get as much money as they are willing to LEGALLY work for. Namely due to the Information Age shift in society.

Times’A Changing

Cost of living ain’t no joke. So obviously, that was the point of the UniteHere post. Right? Cost of living has increased and companies need to pay people livable wages. Since people are under paid they are needing multiple low paying jobs to make ends meet. See, I get it! What I don’t get is why people are putting their advancement in the hands of corporations. The same corporations that are in business to make money. The same corporations that view their employees as a line item expense; and you know everyone wants to cut expenses as much as possible. Hopefully that puts into perspective why relying on corporations to fully and completely meet your income needs are detrimental to an individual’s advancement.

Control Your Coin

There was once a time when having one job and one income was enough. However, times have certainly changed and that is no longer the case. Relying on one income places a modern professional in a vulnerable position. You literally hand over control to someone else to either limit or eliminate your earning potential. Keep it up and see where that can leave you. Let me save you some time…IN THESE STREETS! Why do that when you don’t have to.

Multiple Streams of Income

A popular phrase that you may have heard or seen floating around social media recently is that you have to have multiple streams of income. The meaning of this phrase is to have many ways to make money. Years ago our parents and grandparents were able to reap the benefits of job security. Employees would remain on their jobs for years and retire with benefits. Employers were committed to keeping them employed. Contrarily today, countless young people are finding themselves employed one day and unemployed the next. Mind you, that is with VERY EXPENSIVE degrees.

I AM A Modern Professional

I don’t limit myself to only one way to earn income. Most importantly, I don’t believe a professional today should neither earn only one income, nor should you have one source of income. Especially since everyone desires financial security and wealth. Based on research, most wealthy people have made their money from having multiple streams of income. Here’s an info graphic detailing just a few billionaires’ journeys.

Use What You Got To Get What You Want

Please understand, I am in no way saying you need to be a business owner or work 2 and 3 jobs, clocking in and out here, there and everywhere. I encourage people to keep their jobs if they want to; but couple that job with a side something. Do the work to discover something you’re good at or interested in. Make or do something and charge for the product or service. You can even join a network marketing company; I’m affiliated with two. In addition to being a Realtor and owner of a photobooth company, I am also a financial services educator with Primerica Financial Services and a brand ambassador for ItWorks Global.

In Conclusion

One job use to be enough. One job is probably still enough for some people. I am imploring you not to settle for one income stream when your earning potential is limitless. Find what you do well and get paid for it. Never give the responsibility of your financial security to any one corporation or entity.
